6. Mahela Jayawardene 370 vs South Africa, Colombo 2006
Having played some good cricket in England a month back, Sri Lanka was up against South Africa in 2006. Mahela Jayawardene had been in good shape that season. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat on a spider friendly wicket. The Proteas must have repented this decision as they were bowled out for a mere 169. Sri Lankan openers were dismissed by Dale Steyn in his 2nd over. Kumara Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were out in the middle. Both of them, especially Jayawardene played the innings of his life, which led to a record breaking partnership of 624 runs, highest for any wicket in any form. Murlidharan’s 5 wickets haul in the 2nd innings helped Sri Lanka win the test match by an innings and 153 runs. However, Jayawardene’s 370 runs was the highlight of that test match, as he became the 4th highest run scorer in Test Cricket.
