8. Moeen Ali (England)
For the first time in a calendar year, Moeen Ali accumulated 1,000 runs in Test cricket. The elegant batsman scored as many as four centuries, this year. Ali had a poor start to the year as he failed to make an impression in South Africa. But Moeen started to get into his groove from Sri Lanka series. He made an effortless 155 at Chester-le-Street. Then again he had a rough start against Pakistan and soon there were question marks on his spot.
But the 29-year-old silenced his critics in some style. The left-hander pocketed 299 runs in last two Tests, that too batting at no.7 and not only saved his spot but got a promotion to no.5 for Bangladesh series. At Chittagong, he made an invaluable 68 in 1st innings to lead England to a respectable total but was inconsistent in remainder of the series. In India, the Worcestershire batsman made centuries in the first and last Tests of the series.
Apart from scoring 1,078 runs in 29 innings at 46.86, Moeen also picked up 37 wickets with the red-cherry in hand.
