Dinesh Karthik is perhaps one of the most unlucky cricketer of India
One of the most unfortunate player to take up cricket is Dinesh Karthik by taking birth in the era of Dhoni and taking up Wicket Keeping as an additional art.
If it was not for M.S.Dhoni and his batting heroics over these years, Dinesh Karthik would have been a regular in both the formats of the game. As they say someone’s gain is loss of another, the same happened in the case of Dinesh Karthik. Karthik had the batting prowess to go with his wicket keeping skills. When he broke out into the international scene he was dubbed to be the next Adam Gilchrist. The aforesaid thing didn’t happen though, mainly due to his lapse in concentration. In 2007,he was introduced to the test scenario and was asked to open the innings in England with Jaffer. He scored three fifties in each of the three tests as India came home with a series victory. He lost his way after that due to bad form and lack in concentration in his wicket-keeping skills. The continued success of Mahendra Singh Dhoni also contributed to his downfall. On many occasions,he was called back into the team as a specialist batsman which shows the belief the team management had in is batting skills.
That was the past of Dinesh Karthik which we are pretty aware of. Dinesh Karthik in the IPL has played for three teams – Kings XI Punjab,Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians. Karthik has always been showcasing his talent in this format. After he was purchased by Mumbai Indians, it gave him a new life and he was made to feel more important to the team for 2 reasons – One,he is the sole recognizable keeper, two his exploits with the bat in the opening season for Mumbai began to start getting noticed. In Ipl 6,he started off quite well. He has played two brilliant innings in this IPL so far. First one was a glittering 60 (37) and then a scintillating 86 (48). Both these knocks contributed well in winning the match for his team and now resulted in making him the worthy holder of the prestigious orange cap in Ipl 6. If he becomes more consistent like this,he can still make a comeback into the national side as a specialist batsman even if Dhoni is already there and if the situation arises, can even replace him as the keeper, provided he is not sloppy behind the wickets.Anyway,Dinesh Karthik is on a dream run in this IPL.He was also consistent for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. He has got good technique and temperament to succeed even in the longer format.Challenges and competitions are always good to see.It will not only force Dhoni to be more consistent for India but will work as an inspiration for other batsmen too.
